Michael Hussey: 'Mr. Cricket: Driven to succeed'

Sure it may still be the early stages of his innings in International cricket to release an Autobiography, but this book offers something different.
From the same publishers of Andrew Symonds’ ‘Roy: Going for broke’, we get the release of Michael Hussey’s ‘Mr. Cricket: Driven to succeed'.
Like Andrew Symonds’ book, which was used to clarify a few questions for people regarding his origins and rise to recognition, Huss’ book slogs on a different path.
It takes a look at his early days in Western Australia, backyard cricket with his brother David (Australia/ Victoria) and the fights that resulted in brotherly rivalry, his junior state days and the drive leading up to the realisation of cricket being his identity.
It is inspiring, highlights the key success factors of the Hussey mind as well as the persistence and hard work in getting to the elite level.

After reading the book I had a new level of respect for Michael. I knew he’d grafted to get into the Australian team (his age at when he made the cut was evidence of his patience) but I soon realised quite clearly why Michael is Mr. Cricket!
He really does live the game. His mind is always focusing on it, he is always eager to practice, always wanting to become the master of his own talent. It actually gets exhausting after a while seeing what an overdrive Michael is on with this amazing game,

The book covers his cricket career (up until release in late 2007) with endless tips for on and off the cricket field.
Through out there are blocks with bulleted points regarding topics and notes Michael has made over the years relating to the building blocks of his career.
For on the cricket field, he speaks of innings preparations, getting settled at the crease, mental elements of building an innings, getting to know your natural game as you grow and develop, leadership roles, keeping motivated, practicing hard, setting season goals, team work development, getting to know other players mind sets and personalities, routines and believe it or not so much more!

The reason this approach makes this book of Michael’s such an elaborate read is because many of these principles can be adopted into ones life, almost a motivation basis.
Seeing how hard Michael has worked, what a great team player he is as well as a world class batsman, it made me find it all very genuine
Many of these topics he approaches on the self-motivation & determination frontier can be related to your family life, relationships, the work place, studies and short and long term planning.
I have found many elements very logical Michael pointed out, but the simplicity often escapes your thoughts and it’s easy to preach, but practice! That’s an aspect he seems to articulate to the reader very sensibly!
It’s a tool I have used to motivate myself from time to time and that’s what’s great.

On a lighter, less intense view on the book, it is a fairly easy read throughout but the sort of read you would find yourself referring back to as there is a fair bit to absorb on that Mr. Cricket mental side of things.
It has letters and contributions from Steve Waugh (We all know Tugga), John Buchanan (Former Australian cricket coach), Amy Hussey (Michael’s wife) and a handful of other people who have been apart of Michael’s journey.

So, whether you are looking for a good read to make the lady think you are busy, get a few tips for your cricket or find out more about a great role model and sportsman for Australian cricket, I think you will find value for yourself in this autobiography of Michael ‘Mr. Cricket’ Hussey!

Google the book to get prices, locate retailers and see if it’s available in your country.

Hey man,

Good on ya for writing in and letting us know about the Huss bio. It must be great to read about how he feels once he is at the crease and in the heat of the moment. I love how he gives his all for the team. Still one of my favorite cricketers along with Ponting, Hayden and Lee.

are you in a team by the way? Ah man I miss playing cricket so much. Its been over 12 years since I touched a bat or a ball. I use to live and breathe cricket but then I found music, art and girls. I watch it regularly though, can't get enough of it.

hey!
Yeah, try get a copy for yourself!
I play socially still, but quit for 6 years...well music, beer & girls. Hah! Nah passionate about the game, never stopped watching it, but have stopped playing from time to time, it take up alot of time to play. Its a great game and once your hooked it's hard to get out!

Yeah, I will wait eagerly for Punter to release a full on autobiography, like Steve Waugh. I imagine Matthew Hayden (besides his cook books) would have a similar content to Hussey regarding the hard work, maybe a bit more comical too. Quite keen to read Ian Bothams sometime.

I do know that there are Ashes Tour Diaries that come out. I believe Ponting has one too. The ones I read were either blogs? or diary entries? of binga's Ashes 05 tour. I read it somewhere online. can't remember where, but it had some good insight as to how everyone was feeling in the dressing room after they lost the ashes series.
Most of these players as well as England players have their own columns now, so that makes it more intimate and interesting to see where they are coming from.

Yeah Ricky had the Captains tour diary, which would be a good read, but I prefer autobiographies.

I find many people find the lifestyle and building blocks in getting to such a great height in sport fascinating, I just enjoy hearing each persons story. Something about it that grabs us all as consumers.

Yeah a few guys have columns here and there.

Well it seems like the Symonds might not be joining the team after all. The squad will be announced by the end of this month and CA has already started commenting on it.
Watson has been considered to replace Symonds. Its funny how a while ago Watson was replaced by Symonds and gave Symonds a good comeback.
ICC award nominee have been announced, they are up on cricinfo website. Here are my choices for the winners...

Cricketer of the Year:
Shivnarine Chanderpaul - He has had a hell of a year.

Test Player of the Year:
Hmm tie between Chanderpaul and Jayawardene.

ODI Player of the Year:
Tie between Dhoni and Mohammad Yousuf. Both have had a great year. What the hell is Tendulkar doing there?!?! The guy has hardly played cricket this year. It goes to show how biased these awards are. Sadly, India owns world cricket at the moment.

Emerging Player of the Year:
Ajantha Mendis - The guy has rocked India in the test matches and did well against Pakistan in the ODI tournament.

Twenty20 International Performance of the Year:
Some odd nominees in this one. Gayles been injured throughout. He did make a good century in the opening match against SA in the World Cup but thats about it. Cant really figure out this one. Dhoni might get it. He did win the WC and took his IPL team to the finals.

Spirit of Cricket:
ahah who gives a shit about this one!? There is no spirit or friendliness in cricket?!? are they on crack? Anyway, I'll give it to NZ because they freaking hardly play cricket. They seem to scared to do anything most of the time.

Umpire of the Year:
Simon T or Alem D

I will be posting an article sometime regarding the season ahead: Yeah it is wise of James Sutherland to go ahead with contigency planning should Roy not be ready!

Like I said, Aussie havent played enough cricket to get into this years nominees. Next year though!

Chanderpaul deserves it, he is grounded in any format!

I was thinking Dale Steyn has a shot, but Chanderpaul should take it.

MS one day player no doubt!
And I agree, I dont know what the heck Sachin is in the shortlist for? I think for Aussie Michael Clarke had the best shot for ODI!

Mendis for sure! He has a bright future!

Simon Taufel no doubt there!
When he's in a game, I never fret!

T20 I am not too sure, it's new so will stand back on it.

Spirit of cricket, well, with TV's so many 'unethical' things are being picked that have always occured. NZ got a bit carried away with the 4th ODI against England..but yeah they got a shot.

I've been following the Australia A vs India A match that has been going on. It seems as if Indian pacers are doing a good job to keep Aussies in control. Still a while to go in the match and Aussies got a chance to make a come back.
I noticed that Ronchi is included in the team. I do rate him higher then Haddin. I remember he played a match or two in WI, when Haddin got injured and scored a quickfire fifty. Ian Chappell made a good comment the other day about Haddin's finger being quickly healed after watching Ronchi's innings : )

Ronchi is young and a bit inexperienced but a badass keeper/batsmen and if given a lengthy period of chance, he could be as good as gilchrist. The problem with...well not really a problem but still it seems like it takes a while to get into this damn team and by the time you do get a chance you are over 30. I don't think its a bad thing but its not necessarily a good thing either.

I have been following the game. Voges and Katich in too, Doug Bollinger had great stats last match.

I rate Brad quite highly. A) for his perserverence, B) sticking to his own game plan, C) Knowing his job in the team & D) he is a very well grounded keeper & batsman

Luke Ronchi has more Gilchrist characteristics, but Adam's gone now so we move on. But to fill that void as best possible, Ronchi is the key.
But Brad deserves his shot & rightly so,I rate him very highly! He must stick around...Ronchi can develop his batting & take on the role Brad had during Gilly's reign.
